Artist Statement
My work is primarily monotype prints and small distemper and gouache paintings. The works are based on family interactions, and family addictions, using exaggerated and distorted figures, based on photos I have taken. The prints involve myself and the surroundings of my sister’s house, a place where we often party and have get togethers. The paintings are based on photographs, and distorting the underlying compositions of these photographs that I have taken. There are changes in perspective in the paintings, with lines that don’t meet up and vertical lines that change in depth. There is movement of objects, with adding and subtracting objects (beer cans, ashtrays, garbage, furniture) from the original photographs. There is also changing the colors and values of the original photograph. The work brings up issues of addictions and habits of my family into the forefront, with alcoholism and chain smoking. The work is autobiographical and is a way to keep a pictorial journal, so words are not necessary.
In a way, the changing of perspective and distortion of figure, are how I see things that are going on in my head, especially under the influence of alcohol. How things get fuzzy and warped with the change of what is in my mind and what is reality. There is a recollection of moments that have happened, like a glance at someone in my family when no one else in the area is focused. I take discreet photographs of the people I know, usually without them knowing, I tell them after the fact. I make small sketches based on these photographs to use as reference for the paintings and prints, to distance myself from the warping done by the camera lens.
